Acclaimed educationalist inspires next generation of teachers
Ger Graus OBE, a leading educationalist, met the latest crop of student teachers earlier this month at the University of Cumbria to inspire them about the profession.
Ger spoke to postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) students on their first day, but far from learning where the toilets were or where to get a cup of tea, induction at the University of Cumbria is viewed as an initiation into the teaching profession from day one.

Developing an empathic community
Everyone needs a role model. The smallest of children naturally find someone they look up to and seek out those they most relate to, which continues throughout life.
In international school settings, this can happen within the student body, although some children see no peers who look or are like them. It happens significantly less when students look to an international school’s adult community where most teachers and leaders are white Western and, on average, the majority of young people today are not. It’s a reality that many people within the international school community do not stop to truly contemplate.

KidZania research on childhood aspirations could be educations”s lightbulb moment
Hotel housekeeping or radio broadcaster? Pilot or cabin crew? Findings from a study on the jobs children choose at role-playing theme park KidZania show that gender and class stereotypes are prevalent in children as young as four in the UK. “That children can only aspire to what they know exists,” KidZania Global Director of Education Dr Ger Graus OBE tells U2B in a recent interview.

What does ‘transforming minds for a sustainable future’ mean?
When I ask children around the world, “Why do you go to school?” 85% of the time, the answer is “Because I have to”. What if our education system was geared towards making that answer, “Because I might want to change the world”?
The theme for this year is an excellent rallying point for this kind of thinking. It encourages thinking beyond traditional ideas of teaching and learning. Instead, we should examine the strengths and limitations of our education systems, which include schooling.
